My name is Judy Hayward and I am a textile artist.

I live in the village of Winscombe in North Somerset, a lovely central position for the Mendip Hills, the coast, and the Somerset Levels.

Over the past six years, following early retirement, I studied with Lynne Quinn at Chilcompton Midsomer Quilters obtaining a City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Design and Craft (Stitched Textiles) and then the Diploma in Design and Craft (stitched Textiles).

I have made many quilts over the years but saw the City and Guilds courses as an opportunity to develop In a more experimental way, whilst respecting the age-old skills required to produce high quality, original pieces.

During the winter of 2016, I made many visits to the Somerset Levels. The bare bones of winter revealed the man-made, grid-like structures of road junctions, drainage systems and the hard-edged lines of mechanical peat extraction and linear shapes of crop stubble. These contrasted very starkly with the natural world of the wind-blown reeds, branching shapes of trees and bushes and the beautiful patterns created by early morning frosts. I used these ideas to make several pieces of work (photos attached).

I make my own print blocks and hand dyed and painted fabrics. I combine these with machine quilting and experimental techniques for cutting back and heat distressing fabrics to create heavily textured pieces.

Amongst other works, I will use 2018 to make further pieces representing the seasonal changes on the Levels and hope you will follow my journey.
